How can I register for the Meeting?

Through Tuesday, May 10, you can register in advance online or by fax or mail. You also can register in person at the registration desk in the Italian Room Foyer at the Westin St. Francis. See the Registration page for hours.

Is there a registration fee?

There is no registration fee for the Meeting. Ticket prices for special events are listed on the registration form and the Events & Speakers page.

Can nonmembers attend the Meeting?

Yes, members may invite nonmember colleagues to attend the Meeting and related events. Nonmembers must register and/or purchase tickets in advance or on site at the Westin St. Francis. See the Registration page for details. Note that the Policy Concerning Floor Privileges for Nonmembers provides that nonmembers may not make or second a motion and may not vote on any matter before the Meeting.

Where can I pick up my badge on site?

You should pick up your badge at the registration desk. See the Registration page for hours. You must pick up your badge before entering the Grand Ballroom and wear it for all Meeting sessions and events.

Why are there colored dots on some badges?

We use a green dot on a badge to indicate that the wearer is a newly elected member of the Institute, and a red dot to designate those attending an Annual Meeting for the first time. Keep an eye out for green and red dots so you can welcome fellow members to ALI and to the Meeting! Officers and members of the Council are designated by a blue dot on a badge - don't hesitate to introduce yourself to them.

Special Events

How can I purchase tickets for the Luncheons, Members Reception, or Annual Dinner?

Through Tuesday, May 10, you can purchase tickets in advance online or by fax or mail. You also can purchase tickets on site at the registration desk. See the Registration page for hours. Space is limited at these events, so we recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Where should I pick up my tickets?

Tickets must be picked up at the registration desk in the Italian Room Foyer in advance of the event.

Can I make seating requests for the Luncheons or Annual Dinner?

Seating is unassigned at the Luncheons, so you can sit at any table except the few that are marked as reserved. Seating requests for the Annual Dinner may be made on the registration form and on site at the registration desk until 12 noon on Monday, May 16.

When is the last day to cancel a ticket purchase without penalty?

To be eligible for a refund, cancellations must be received in writing by 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, May 10, by fax to 215-243-1636 or by email to After that time, refunds will not be provided, although we would still appreciate knowing if you are not able to use your ticket.

Are there any special events for new members?

Yes, on Monday, May 16, ALI will hold a luncheon for members elected since May 2010. If you are in that group, you will receive an invitation to the luncheon from ALI. In addition, there typically is an event organized by new members the Sunday before the Meeting. If you were elected since May 2010, you should receive details from the event organizers.

Hotels and Travel

How do I get the ALI rates at the Westin St. Francis or other hotels?

ALI offers discounted room rates at the Westin St. Francis and at the Club Quarters. The rates are available until April 13, or until the ALI room block is full, whichever comes first. Visit the Hotels page for instructions on making reservations at the ALI rates.

Can I get a discount on my airfare to the Annual Meeting?

ALI does not have a discount program with any airline.

How will the San Francisco hotel workers' labor dispute affect the Meeting?

There should be no effect on the Meeting. In April 2011 the union removed the Westin St. Francis from its boycott list. All Meeting sessions, including the session on the Restatement Third of Employment Law, will be held at the Westin St. Francis.


How can I find information on the status of the projects being presented at the Meeting?

The agenda notes whether projects are being presented for approval or for discussion. You also can visit the Projects section of our main website for more information on the projects.

How can I get copies of the Meeting drafts?

You will receive by mail in advance of the Meeting any drafts that you requested via our draft-selection questionnaire. You also can download the drafts in PDF format after they are posted on this website (access is free for members and project participants). If we have a working email address for you, we will notify you by email when each draft is posted. In addition, you can pick up printed copies of the drafts at the Meeting.

I'd like to present a motion at the Meeting. How do I go about doing so?

You should submit your motion in accordance with the procedure described on the Drafts & Motions page.


Is CLE credit available?

Yes, CLE credit is available for attendance at the project sessions at the Annual Meeting and/or the Members Consultative Group Meeting on Principles of Government Ethics for a $100 administrative fee. In addition, there is an ALI-ABA CLE Program on Sunday, May 15, at which attendees can earn two hours of ethics credits. The tuition for the program is $150 for ALI members and $180 for non-members.

I have a disability. How can I make special arrangements to participate in the Meeting?

Please inform our Meetings Department (by phone at 215-243-1611 or by email to at least two weeks in advance of any special arrangements required for you to be able to participate fully in the Meeting or in any of the related events.

Is financial assistance available?

Assistance may be available for public interest lawyers. Please contact the Membership Department (by email to or by phone to 215-243-1666) for more information.

Will there be wireless access at the Meeting?

Yes, free wireless access will be available in the Grand Ballroom. Details will be posted in the registration area. The Westin St. Francis offers complimentary wireless access in the Caruso's lounge area in the Tower Lobby.

What is the dress code for the Meeting and related events?

The dress code is business attire. Black-tie is optional at the Annual Reception and Dinner.

I can't attend, but would like to know what happens at the Meeting. How can I find out?

Check the Members' Blog, which will be updated throughout the Meeting. We also will post on this website a daily summary of actions taken at the Meeting and videos of speeches and remarks at the Opening Session, Luncheons, and Annual Dinner. Of course, we'll later provide a full report on the Meeting in The ALI Reporter.

Will the Meeting be available by webcast?

No, but videos of the speeches and remarks at the Opening Session, Luncheons, and Annual Dinner will be posted on this website within a few days after they're made.
